ACC Custom Liveries – Introduction
As a long time sim racer in Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC) I have used custom liveries created by other people, usually my brother who is far more capable when it comes to grapical creativity. Me I am more of a logical thinker and my creative skills are much more oriented to writing code and desiging applications and systems.
I decided it was time to figure out how to create my own custom liveries for ACC and started researching it. I found a plethora of tutorials especially on YouTube, but every one I found, including some that claimed to be for absolute beginners, failed to explain fully why I had to do certain things. Sure they showed the steps to follow but seemed to make assumptions about my knowledge of the tools they were demonstrating. Others showed how to do it with PhotoShop, which is a very expensive tool and not the most intuitive graphics application out there.
Don’t get me wrong I am not a complete idiot when it comes to graphics applications or 3D building tools. I have created and published games, which requires some level of skill with these tools, but still, I need to know why a particular skill or technique is required not just that I need to use it.
So I decided to create a tutorial that really is for those who have no knowledge or experience of tools or techniques required. That does mean it will be a long tutorial so it will be broken down over multiple pages. Why a written tutorial? Well the problem with video tutorials is they are hard to change. I have created my fair share of video tutorials for colleagues and teams I led during my career as a software developer, they take some time to record and if you make a mistake your have to record that bit again and splice it into the final video. With written articles like this I can make changes real quick and get the update out to you immediately.
If you find an error or something that needs further explanation let me know, I will fix the error or update the content as quickly as I can.
So how wil this tutorial be structured? It will be divided into multiple sections, each of which will cover multiple related topics. The higher level sections are:
- Getting Started – Installing and setting up the tools we will be using.
- What is a Custom Livery – We will look at the structure of a custom livery in ACC and how ACC uses the files you create to display it in game.
- Creating a Custom Livery with Graphics application
- Create a Custom Livery with a 3D Modelling application
Lets press on and get our Custom Livery development environment setup and ready.
